Language and Literacy Education (LLED)

The range of the Department's work includes research and teaching in Literacy Education, Teaching English as a Second Language, Modern Language Education and Teacher Librarianship. LLED also contributes to the MA Program in Children's Literature, working with colleagues in the Faculty of Arts, and maintains a strong interest in the teaching of verbal and related arts, particularly literature and drama/theatre education.

We invite you to explore this site to learn about our work in Canada and internationally. You will see that we collaborate with educators committed to social change and better opportunities for learning in many places: in school districts in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, with Canadian colleagues in each province, and with researchers and educators in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, and across North and South America.

The LLED Research Seminars are an opportunity for faculty, graduate students, and visiting scholars to introduce/showcase their recent scholarly work to the LLED community. Everyone welcome. Redevelopment of the Language Education Research Centre (LERC) During summer LERC is closed for renovation. The children's and young adult book collection has been redefined as a teaching collection so it can more effectively support the range of the Department's courses. A significant number of new titles will be added in the fall. As well, LERC's former circulation function has now transferred to UBC's Education Library, thus increasing access to many titles. The space itself will be redefined to better support LLED's research and teaching programs, including the new Digital Literacy Centre and drama/theatre in education work, together with an expanding commitment to our literacy and children's literature programs.
